Education PROfessionals placing data at risk.

iStorage survey reveals nearly 40 percent of respondents at leading education technology conference BETT have lost portable storage devices.

Research conducted at the recent BETT 2013 education technology conference has revealed nearly two in every five (38%) respondents have lost a portable storage device. The survey was conducted by iStorage, a leading specialist in portable storage and digital encryption, amongst higher education technology professionals, ICT coordinators, headteachers and other school leaders.

Approximately 190 attendees took part in the survey at the conference, which revealed 70% of respondents did not encrypt the data contained on portable devices. Respondents also confirmed that while most do not encrypt portable data, 98% believed data loss to be a serious or growing concern. 95% of respondents also felt the use of an encrypted portable device would be preferable to an unprotected portable drive for daily use.

“While it is perhaps to be expected that non-IT professionals are less aware of the data security risks posed by using unencrypted storage, it remains alarming that so many respondents admitted to losing portable data storage devices, especially when they may contain information relating to the individual’s work,” explained John Michael, CEO of iStorage. “The results underline the importance of educating individuals and institutions of the need to entrust data on the move to encrypted storage devices.”
