datAshur

How do I use the datAshur for the first time?

The datAshur comes with a default User PIN which will unlock the device for the first time, allowing the user to create their own unique User and Admin PINs.

Please follow this procedure:

1. Press the Key Button
2. Enter 1-1-2-2-3-3-4-4
3. Press the Key Button
4. The green LED light will indicate the device is unlocked.
5. Plug your datAshur into the powered USB port of your host device

Can I unlock my datAshur if the battery is dead?

Yes, you can still use your datAshur even if the battery is fully discharged. You will need to connect the datAshur to any powered USB port. While connected, enter the User or Admin PIN to unlock your drive. You may wish to leave your drive connected for some time to allow battery recharge. During this time your datAshur doesn’t need to be unlocked.

What happens if I forget the PIN to my datAshur?

If you forget the User PIN, you can use the Admin PIN to unlock the drive and set a new User PIN. However, if you forget both the User and Admin PIN, there is no way of gaining access to the data stored on the drive. As part of the drive’s designed security, there are no back doors into the drive. You will need to reset your datAshur in order to use it again. The reset process creates a new encryption key, deletes User and Admin PINs and deletes all data.

What is Brute Force Hacking Protection?

If the PIN is entered incorrectly 10 consecutive times, the drive will be completely reset. The reset process creates a new encryption key, deletes User and Admin PINs and deletes all data. The datAshur will have to be formatted each time after the defence mechanism is triggered.

How do I reset the datAshur?

The reset feature is useful in case the Admin and User PINs are forgotten, or if you would like to delete all data stored on the drive and configure a new User PIN. The reset process will clear the User and Admin PIN, the encryption key and will destroy all data.

This means a new User PIN will have to be defined in order to re-enable the datAshur. Also, since this forces the creation of a new encryption key, the datAshur will have to be reformatted.

Please follow this procedure:

1. Press and hold the Key Button and the number 2 Button for 3 seconds.
2. Press 9 – 9 – 9 and press the Key Button.
3. Press the Key Button again.

How do I create a new User PIN after the reset process?

Once the datAshur has been reset, either with the manual rest or from a brute force attack (10 unsuccessful attempts to unlock), a new User PIN will need to be defined.

Please follow this procedure:

1. Press and hold the Key Button for 3 seconds.
2. Within 10 seconds, enter the new User PIN.
3. Press the Key Button to save.
4. Re-enter the new User PIN number & press the Key Button.

If the new User PIN is accepted, the Green LED will flash.

You datAshur will need to be formatted before you can use it again.

How many unique PINs can I create on my datAshur?

You can set 1 Admin PIN and 1 User PIN on your datAshur.

Can I use datAshur without the PIN?

Since the datAshur uses a built-in full disk hardware encryption engine, the only way to gain access to your data is by entering the correct User or Admin PIN. Without the PIN, it is impossible to unlock and access data on your datAshur.

What encryption algorithm is used in datAshur?

iStorage datAshur uses military-grade AES-CBC 256-bit algorithm.

Can I use my datAshur on different Operating Systems?

iStorage datAshur is platform independent. That means that it is universally compatible with all of the most common Operating Systems. Please make sure that your flash drive is formatted to the correct file system required by your Operating System.

Is datAshur Dust and Water resistant?

datAshur is IP57 rated, meaning that it is dust and water resistant.

What is the datAshur’s operating temperature?

The datAshur is designed to work in varied temperature environments:

Operating Min/Max temperature 0 – 40C
Storage Min/Max temperature -20 – 60C
Operating Humidity max 90%
Storage Humidity max 95%

What is BadUSB and are iStorage devices susceptible to this exploit?

BadUSB is a theoretical exploit that was presented by SR Labs at the Black Hat conference in August 2014. SR Labs demonstrated a vulnerability in one USB device that allowed malicious code to be programmed into the USB controller through a firmware update process.

The attack described is very sophisticated and, in the case of iStorage products, would require advanced knowledge of our USB controller, a leaked version of our firmware, the programming tool to update our controller, the password used for our programming tool and an in-depth understanding of the device’s functionality.

According to SR Labs, the failsafe method to eliminate this threat is to simply disable the ability to update the controller’s firmware. Many of iStorage devices shipping today, including all our USB 3.0 security products, already have the firmware locked which prevents field updates to the USB controller.

As a continuous improvement, iStorage is locking down the firmware on all USB controllers used in iStorage devices to safeguard against this vulnerability. We recommend checking our website periodically for notices regarding BadUSB and Security Updates.
